As a Mercy EMT, your main responsibility is to provide Basic Life Support and emergency medical techniques to individuals in need of assistance. This includes assessing and treating patients, as well as stabilizing their condition in emergency situations. You will also be responsible for operating and maintaining assigned ambulances and stations, ensuring they are always prepared for immediate response. Additionally, you will actively participate in continuing education and training programs to stay updated on medical advancements and industry best practices, ensuring that you provide the highest level of care to those you serve.
- Render pre-hospital emergency care according to established medical protocols.
- Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic Life Support level. Provide continuing care and treatment while enroute to a facility; monitor and report changes in patient condition.
- Under the medical direction and following prescribed standing orders perform a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents, and solutions, pulmonary ventilation, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills for Basics.
- Drive the ambulance to non-emergency/emergency scenes, and transport patients to the appropriate facility.
- Assist and coordinate with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergencies.
- Perform a variety of emergency medical treatment services at the basic and advanced life support levels.
- Employ safe lifting and moving techniques.
- Maintain ambulance vehicle, equipment, and station.
- Lead and/or participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), standard first aid, and emergency medical techniques. Participate in public health education and screening.
- Act as a preceptor for EMS students.
- Handle radio communications during emergency and non-emergency situations professionally.
- Keep records and logs on daily activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS (GENERAL)
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors.
- Physical effort involves – for indefinite periods – mobility within an office and field environment; subject to infectious diseases, toxic waste, chemical, dust/mites, fume, odor, explosive, electrical, and mechanical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, temperature swings, constant noise, and heights; working in trenches; walking; twisting body; stooping; standing; squatting; sorting; sitting; seeing; running; pushing; pulling; lifting; dragging, and carrying a minimum of 150lbs; climbing; crawling; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person and by two-way radio; fine finger manipulation for writing and typing on a personal computer; operation of Advanced Life Support equipment and light rescue tools; operation of an emergency vehicle through city traffic.
- The employee may encounter stress when working a rescue scene, unsuccessful attempts at rescuing victims, and managing critical patients.
- The work schedule is typically four 12-hour shifts scheduled Monday through Saturday or two 24-hour shifts, Monday through Sunday.
- The employee will be required to respond to calls during all hours.
